Dear MEBCO Member:
Together, we are facing a truly unprecedented situation. The global COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our families, businesses, communities, and our way of life. During this time, we wanted to reach out to update you on how MEBCO continues to work for you.
First and foremost, our hearts go out to anyone who's been impacted by the virus. We are inspired by the selfless health care and essential workers around the world who are on the front lines working tirelessly to care for people in need.
Entering 2020, Multi-Employer Pension Plans (MEPPs) were just on the verge of emerging from the 2008 financial crisis. MEPPs were close to, at, or above fully funded status. This all changed with the COVID-19 crisis and resulting impacts on investment markets, low interest rates, unprecedented layoffs, unemployment for plan participants, and economic activity.
As you know, MEBCO represents the interests of Canadian multi-employer pension and benefit plans and the millions of workers and families represented by its members across the country. MEBCO is encouraged by and applauds the extraordinary efforts of the Federal Government to address this crisis in the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act ("CERA"), including the relief measures targeted at income interruption caused to these members as a result of COVID-related workplace disruption and the impact on the health and welfare of workers and their families. To the extent that these benefit plans have reserves or can allocate contributions to provide additional support in the form of income replacement, enhanced member assistance and health and wellness benefits, to mitigate the catastrophic economic and health impact of the crisis, we believe the Federal Government should implement the legislative and administrative changes necessary to support these private sector efforts.
Thank you for your continued support. BE SAFE. BE WELL.
